This kitchen, for example, was designed specifically for a family who loves to entertain. Their nuclear family consists of 2 adults and a child, but their extended family including their friends is much larger. Their home is on the relatively larger side, but as a 19th century build, the rooms within the home are still quite small. By opening one wall, we created a flow between the kitchen and dining room that allowed for open communication between the rooms. This kitchen will house memories of belly laughs while sitting at the island with wine while the host chops vegetables, and the kids peel potatoes at the dining table, and the grandparents recall stories from the adjacent living room. Initially we were going to do a white base for the walls to keep everything bright and fresh, but when we saw ‘whirlpool’ in person and how amazing it looked next to ‘raging sea’ , we pivoted and decided to make whirlpool the base in the room. Now we’re working with whirlpool as the base color and raging sea as the secondary color. That color will be used on the crown moulding to create an illusion of a more built up crown and draw the eye upwards to help maximize the space visually. We’ll be painting the base trim the same color as the wall , as opposed to keeping it white, lengthen the wall and add texture. This is one of the tricks I recommend when working within a color palette. The more of one color you see in a space, the more your brain registers it as ‘same’. Bunk beds are usually a great choice for shared rooms and mini bunk beds work great for toddlers; however, my 2 year old is a daredevil and I know for sure he’d want to climb to the top bunk with his brother and try some new jumps. Additionally, the ceilings are only 7.5’, so even with a 46” high bunk, we’d only have a little over 3 feet of clearance before we are within reaching distance of the ceiling fan. The ceiling fan gets used quite a bit in this room in the summer time, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve hit the ceiling fan with my hands reaching up to stretch or put my shirt on. Much safer! I imagined the two having a conversations at bedtime about whatever 4 and 2 year olds talk about and having some quality brother time head to head. I was sure this option would work! Then, I measured the space and realized this configuration would consume most of the room. While I do love and support bedrooms that are mostly bed, this layout didn’t allow any space for storage and it felt way too much like a furniture store to me. That’s never the vibe we’re going for. This why we always measure first! In fact, its exciting to figure out a layout that’s exactly right. It’s very much like Tetris where you manipulate a piece until you find the perfect fit. For this space, that perfect fit came in the form of a trundle bed. It takes up the space of one bed like the bunk bed does and gives the intimate feel of side by side beds like the L shaped configuration does.
