How To Love Your Small Space

Confession: I have big love for small spaces.

That probably does not come as a surprise to you since the name of my business is ‘Maximizing Tiny Interiors’ but in all honesty, the beginning of my business started out of necessity to make a small space work. In metro areas, homes are typically smaller and this is where I chose to live. However, through working with clients like you who live in small spaces and seeing the joy they feel when they have a space that fills their needs, I fell fully in love with small spaces. I’m confident that I can help you fall in love with your small space.

If you own your home, custom millwork is going to be your best friend. Small spaces aren’t just small, but they have the audacity to be awkwardly shaped, too — and can we talk about small spaces near cities completely forgoing closet space in the name of square footage? —Ok, cool, but where do I put my things? This is where custom millwork comes into play. By designing custom solutions for your home you add to the property value, but more importantly, you add to your lifestyle value. I’m often met with hesitation when I pitch custom millwork to design consultation clients. It can feel overwhelming to invest in a permanent fixture in your home, but it’s actually only in modern times that standalone furniture became commonplace. If you have an older home, you may notice the built in bookcases and hutches that exist(ed) throughout.

So, how do you get comfortable with customized built in solutions for your home?

  1. Assess Need. The easiest spaces to add customized built in solutions is where you need storage. Is there a closet in your bedroom that’s just not cutting it, build it out! Is there a nook in your living room that could use a bookcase, build one in!

  2. Asses Value. Consider the value it adds to your life to be able to design exactly what you want. If you have an extensive record collection that requires a very specific height and depth of shelf, you can specify that! If you need a closet that converts to a desk or a bed/loft/play area, it can be done.

  3. Assess Process. Consult a professional to walk you through the process. If you know you could benefit from custom millwork, but are uncertain what that looks like for you in your home, how to specify it, and who to go to, a professional can be your guide. We design custom millwork all the time!

The secret to loving your small space is making it yours. Customize it! Whether you rent or own, all things are possible. Need a little help? Submit an inquiry!
