Ten Tweaks to Make your Small Space Look Huge
Your small space doesn’t have to look SMALL. In fact, with a little creative energy, proportion play, and color cohesion, you can make your space look HUGE.
Here are 10 tips you can put to use right away!
1. Choose furniture that fits the space. I know, it seems obvious, but a common mistake is either choosing oversized furniture, which makes the space look too small, or choosing furniture that is too small giving the space a dollhouse effect. The trick is to choose furniture that fits the space most completely, instead of opting for smaller pieces. This creates a more custom look in the space almost as if the piece was made for the room. Smaller pieces tend to get lost in a space and pieces that are too big crowd the space.
For example, if you have a wall in your living room that measures 108 inches, find a sofa that fills majority of that space and save a bit of room for a side table.
2. Choose a rug that fills the space.
Rugs help define spaces in your home. The right size rug in the right spot can make a world of difference. A good rule of thumb is to always choose the maximum dimensions your space allows. You don’t want your rug hanging out in the middle of the floor. The goal of a rug is to cover as much floor space as possible.

3. If you have curtains, make sure they are mounted higher and wider than the window frame and touch the floor.
The following guide from Apartment Therapy is great to go by if you can, although not all spaces allow. In the case that you find yourself in a space with odd window dimensions, go as high and wide as you can with your curtain mount and try your best to make sure the curtains at least peck the floor.
4. Go Vertical
In a small space, floor space is sacred. Put your walls to work to save on floor space. If you can mount it, do it. Wall mounted tv stands, bedside tables, shelves, side tables.
If you’re lucky enough to have high ceilings, be sure to purchase furniture as tall as your space allows. Do you have 12 foot tall ceilings? Add a wardrobe that’s 10 feet tall instead of 5 feet tall.
5. Multipurpose furniture
The more uses you can get out of your furniture, the better. A bench with storage, a tv stand with storage, a hall table that doubles as a litter box. Make your furniture work for you!
6. Add purpose to spaces that would otherwise be wasted. Add a cabinet in the space between the sink and the toilet in the bathroom, Add a shelf or kitchen island to a bare wall in your kitchen, Add a sofa table behind your sofa, create a nook in the corner of your kitchen, or add shelving above your closets!
7. Change your color scheme. Colors in medium tones tend to make spaces look smaller. Choose very light colors or very moody/deep tones to create an illusion of more space.

8. Keep a consistent color palette through your entire home. Complementary colors are your friend. In a small space, maintaining a consistent color palette creates a cohesive experience rather than a segmented look and feel. It brings the entire home together which actually makes your space feel bigger.
9. Maintain clear points of entry — Energy flow is essential to creating Feng Shui in a space. You want to make sure that paths are clear in your home from the minute you step in. Cluttered spaces immediately appear to be smaller than they are. To ensure that you are maximizing your tiny space, try to ensure that spaces maintain an open layout and minimal clutter.
10. Mirrors, Mirrors, Mirrors!!! Put a mirror wherever you can! Mirrors help light travel through a space and create an illusion of infinite space and depth. Go big and explore unconventional shapes. The larger the mirror the better. My favorite mirror is the Hovet by IKEA because it’s so affordable and versatile. Here are a few examples of how many different ways it can be used in a space.
