In the era of Amazon, fast fashion and fast furniture, we’ve forgotten the value of things that take time. There’s been a recent shift to sustainability that has eased the pressure of the “fast” of it all and placed a highlight on economically friendly practices. You know good design when you look at it, but do you know why it looks good? Why it feels good? The answer is that it’s cohesive, your brain understands what’s going on in the room and what the intentions of the room are— and it’s not just minimal spaces. Maximalists err towards a cohesive aesthetic too, but on a larger scale with more items. It’s not as random as you might think.

Somewhere along the way, the art of building a home became more about real estate than the true meaning of ‘home’. Take a moment to reflect on your favorite memories of home. Are you thinking about property value and resale value or are you thinking about the laughs, the friends, and that one cozy corner where you can curl up and exhale? The face value is easy to see. A quick Zillow search can likely give you a monetary figure, but I encourage you to look past that and see the luxury in the details of your home. That luxury is priceless.

If you’re the average consumer it’s very unlikely that you’ve ever furnished an entire room all at once. Most people start off with inherited furniture or low end retail furniture when they first move into their own home and slowly replace things as the budget and time allow. As a result, you might reach a certain point in your adult life where you look around and realize how completely random your home design has become. It’s totally normal, but not always welcome.
