One Room Challenge - Week Five (+ Six) | Progress

There’s paint on the walls, y’all… and that’s about it, but check it out! The faux built up crown has been taped and painted and the green looks fantastic. Not only that, but the rug and wallpaper has been delivered!

Although your instinct may be to leave things in boxes until you’re ready for them, we always recommend that clients open their orders upon receipt to ensure that they’ve received the correct item. This ensures that you have time to send things back or order extra when you’re ready to use the item. So, as soon as the rug and wallpaper arrived, I opened them up in the space and placed them against the paint to ensure that they looked how I imagined they would. Even though we got samples of the wallpaper in advance, we were not able to get samples of the rug, so it was important to open it up and make sure that it matched the picture in my brain and worked well with the wallpaper!

Remember my theory on creating the illusion of a bulkier crown with paint? Do you see how your brain just thinks that everything green is the crown moulding? Its draws your eye upwards and emphasizes the height of the room. This room only has 7.5’ h ceilings, but this trick helps the ceilings feel taller in the space. This will help with adding definition to the room. To that tune, I’ve had an idea stuck in my head that I will finally get to try out this weekend. Hint: It has something do with texture (no surprise there).

In other news, we walked into the perfect storage solution in the “as is” section at IKEA. Remember when I said know your dimensions? Well, when we went into IKEA, I had already done my internet research and knew what I was looking for. The space in the room allowed for 58”w worth of storage. In my experience, I already know that it’s a tricky dimension unless you’re going custom, so I was willing to settle for 48”. I was looking for something that was low enough to allow for visual clearance in the room, but wide enough to support toy storage and play.

My first option was the LIXHULT (pictured on the bottom). Each unit is about 24” wide, so I would need two for 48” of coverage and 3 wouldn’t fit in the space. I didn’t love the grey, but since it was metal, I was open to spray painting it and creating what I wanted.

The next option was the PS Cabinet (pictured in the middle). This was about 47” wide, but a little taller than the LIXHULT and, again, metal, so could be spray painted any color.

Before I even stepped foot into IKEA, I knew that these were the top of mind options, so I sought them out in the showroom to see them IRL. Personally, I liked them both, but when I showed them to my client (my mom). She informed me (for the first time ever) that she did not like metal. “Oddly specific, ma’am, but ok” is precisely what I said to her. My failsafe was the “as is” section and it really came through for us in the form of 2 x Golden Brown EKETs at a steal of a price, which happened to match our yellow colors in the palette pretty spot on AND measure out to 54 inches (Hooray!). I preferred a closed option to keep it feeling neat and avoid visual clutter, but we were able to grab some baskets to remedy that and I may even have a DIY up my sleeves if I can manage to actually complete the other items on the to do list (phew!).

Next up: more paint! Thanks for following along and don’t forget to check out all the other marvelous rooms here.
