One Room Challenge - Week Seven | Fun + Games
It’s all fun and games til there’s one week left of the one room challenge and you’re 2 weeks behind. Say whaaat?! Yea, 2 weeks behind. Now, this project isn’t inherently major. We planned smart and selected items that were readily available (mostly), so that we wouldn’t get caught up in the supply chain. Most of those types of things had arrived by Week 3/4 of the challenge. We planned a mostly simple, construction free project, so we wouldn’t get too caught up in trade availability and demo. However, the logistics of this project were T R I C K Y. As most of you know, I live in Jersey City, NJ and I do not own a car. I can get mostly everywhere on my two feet or on a train. In fact, I can see a train station through my window. The project site, however, happened to be 18 miles away in a very different, very suburban part of NJ. Theoretically, it’s not incredibly difficult to get there via public transportation, in my very real life as a mom of two littles and a business owner, though?……Whew, chile.
Picture this timeline:
8:20(ish) - leave the house to get the kids to school
8:40(ish) - drop the kids at school then get coffee (very important and crucial)
8:57 (ish) - hop on the PATH train to Newark Penn Station
9: 25 (ish) - arrive at Penn Station
9:37 exactly - NJ Transit train from Newark Penn Station to Rahway
9:56 exactly - arrive at Rahway
Sometimes, I’m lucky enough for someone to be available to pick me up from the train station, other times I walk. It’s about 30 minutes on foot. 40 if I’m stopping to look at flowers and pretty houses, which I usually am (haha).
10:30(ish) - arrive at job site
Now I have until about 2:30 before I have to leave to pick up my eldest from school. 4 hours! Widely known fact: 4 hours does not a whole day make *insert sweating emoji. So for those 4 hours, I sweat and work as quickly as possible and do as much as possible to #getherdone.
In Week 7, we mostly completed painting the closet doors a beautiful ombré using paint sponsored by Sherwin Williams. The quality of their paint is unbeatable and I use it in most of my client projects. Colors used from L -R are: Raging Sea, Underseas, Moody Blue, and Whirlpool. On the trim, we used Coral Island. The goal was to mimic shutters often found in beach communities painted vibrant colors. I’d say we accomplished that goal.
Because the walls are already painted Moody Blue and the crown molding is painted Raging Sea , I wanted to bring some contrast into the space. Coral Island fit the bill. If you follow along on Instagram, you know the door in the room is also painted Coral Island, so it was the perfect way to add more of that color in here. What do you think?
Next, it was time to mark some of the larger items off the list like the bed (cue dramatic plot reveal music). If you recall in week 4, we scored an awesome high quality bed on Facebook Marketplace for $125. It was solid pine and about 20 years old, so had lived a full life, but still had lots of love in it. I knew that the finish wasn’t quite what I wanted and decided to do a DIY tan wash with leftover taupe paint (Pebble) from Fusion Mineral Paint. I sanded each piece with 80 grit -> 120 grit -> 220 grit sandpaper before applying the wash and the results speak for itself.
This is the part that feels so close, but yet so far. There’s a peek of completion, but so many smaller items remaining to get there phew! There’s wallpaper hanging, bed building, and mural painting left yet and a little more than a week left to do it! It’s gonna be good though. Don’t forget to check out the other rooms in the One Room Challenge!
